Bolla - The Legacy Home of Amarone

Valpolicella Classica is a picturesque, hilly wine region stretching northwest from the well known city of Verona. A mecca for grape growing, this cooler climate region is filled with ancient vineyards and located at the foothills of the mountains. With a combination of cool winds from the Alps and warm breezes from Lake Garda Valpolicella Classica is known for producing some of Italy's finest red wines, from the bright and lively Valpolicella to the rich, beloved and powerful Amarone.

With a heritage spanning 130 years, Bolla's wine story began in 1883. Founded by Alberto Bolla founded the winery in the town of Soave near Verona, Alberto’s passion and dedication were poured into his first vintage that year and continues to this day. From the volcanic slopes of Soave to the rolling vineyards of Valpolicella, Bolla crafts memorable wines for the whole world to enjoy.

With over 300 hectares of vineyards across Valpolicella Classica, the Soave region, and the Lake Garda area, for over a century, Bolla has been a symbol of quality and tradition, crafting wines that capture the distinct terroir and rich history of northern Italy's most diverse wine regions. The grapes of the region are Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. These ‘grape sisters’ of Verona are indigenous and are the foundation to the Valpolicella and Amarone wines we have all come to love and appreciate.

HISTORY LESSON

Valpolicella has historically been known for their traditional red wines, and also their sweeter Recioto wines by the 1940’s. Amarone hit its superstar status on April 13th, 1953 with the production of 'Amarone del Nonno', vintage 1950. This singular crafted wine was presented in Milan, on 13 April 1953, on the occasion of Alberto Bolla's 80th birthday - made by his son Giorgio for his father -  in the presence of the entire family, colleagues and important journalists.

This was the exact moment that Amarone started its journey to becoming an iconic and prestigious wine. It wasn’t until years later (1968 to be exact), when the first production regulations and establishment of the Doc was approved.

EXCEPTIONAL WINEMAKING

The man behind the Bolla wine portfolio is Chief Winemaker Christian Zulian. A humble and talented man he leads a team of 50 winemaking humans during the extraordinary winemaking process from Soave, to Valpolicella to Amarone. The grapes for all of the Bolla wines are handpicked at the ideal time of year and the artistry of winemaking begins.

Fresh and simply delightful, the Valpolicella is a wine that is easy and fruity, ideal slightly chilled and perfect for any time of the year. Valpolicella Ripasso - as well as the Valpolicella ripasso single vineyard - are made using the original harvest  and then repassed over the leftover dried grapes to create a more savoury and smooth taste profile compared to regular valpolicella wine.

The Amarone grapes are special, they are hand harvested and put away to  dry for approximately three (3) months.  They are then pressed right around the Christmas holidays. Aging in large barrels adds texture, balance and complexity to the wine, making it one of the most loved full-body red wines in Italy.

PORTFOLIO OF ICONIC WINES

Bolla winery has earned a global reputation for excellence, making it a cornerstone of Italian viniculture. Crafting wines that are-authentic yet offering a fresh, modern taste profile. As consumers seek premium and distinctive wines, Amarone's reputation as a top-tier Italian red continues to rise globally.

Wine enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to Amarone for its unique production process, where grapes are dried before fermentation, resulting in a wine with concentrated fruit flavors, deep intensity, and a luxurious, velvety texture. Its versatility also adds to its appeal, as Amarone pairs well with hearty dishes and can age beautifully, making it a favorite for both special occasions and collectors

SUSTAINABILITY & BIODIVERSITY

In recent years, Bolla has taken significant steps toward sustainability, recognizing the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. The winery has implemented eco-friendly practices in its vineyards and production facilities, including reducing water usage, minimizing chemical inputs, and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

Bolla is also committed to preserving the biodiversity of its vineyards, understanding that healthy ecosystems are essential for producing high-quality grapes. By working in harmony with nature, Bolla ensures that its wines will continue to delight wine lovers for years to come.

Bolla Winery is more than just a producer of fine wines—it is a symbol of Italian winemaking excellence and a guardian of tradition. From its humble beginnings in the hills of Soave to its global presence today, Bolla has remained true to its roots while embracing the future. As the winery continues to innovate and grow, wine enthusiasts around the world can look forward to enjoying Bolla’s exceptional wines for generations to come.
